Prevent teachers from Concluding or Deleting SIS Enrollments

Jump to solution

Good Morning,

We've run into situations recently where teachers mistakingly delete or conclude enrollments that were added by the SIS import process.   We'd like to prevent this from happening.   Is there a setting, either via SIS Import, or via Canvas Permissions that would prevent teachers from deleting/concluding enrollments?

In a perfect world, we'd like to continue to let teachers add/remove students from their courses outside of SIS imported students.  We find this more useful than not.   But deleting/concluding SIS registered students is causing problems we'd like to prevent.

Thanks, Glen

Hi Glen,

While there is no way to allow teachers to only enroll outside of the SIS imported students, can restrict teachers from being able to add and remove from courses added via SIS imports.

We do this by having separate sub-accounts. One where our auto-created courses get added to and one where we add what we call master course shells.

In the master course shells sub-account we allow teachers to add and remove users from their course as they deem fit. We also allow them the ability to delete, conclude and reset course content here.

In the live sub-account where courses are created via our SIS we have removed the teachers ability to add and remove users to the course as well as used java script‌  as 925024864 mentioned above to remove the buttons that allow for them todelete, conclude and reset course content.

Hi Glen,

This is absolutely possible, however as far as I know, there is no differentiation between SIS auto-enrolled users, and non-SIS selectively enrolled users. So, I do not believe it is possible to have it both ways.

The *original way that we addressed this is noted below, but after checking the new more granular 'Permissions' in the Admin menu, I see that 'users - add/remove' is addressed under 'Course Roles' 'Permissions' for 'Teacher' and/or other roles that you may want to allocate this and/or other permissions to.

(*original way) If it is more desirable to disallow faculty from deleting/concluding enrollments, and/or sections/courses, this can be done by adding a snippet of JavaScript in you global_custom.js file under Themes in the Admin panel. Let me know if you want the js code.
