SIS Sync Issues with Custom Sections?

Custom sections seem to be the preferred method of setting up differentiated work for students in Canvas. Groups seemed like they would work because you can assign to a group. But, they don't because a single submission counts for all members of the group.

The main concern is that our students are rostered from our SIS (Powerschool) into course sections that match their PS roster. From my understanding, a section enrollment made outside of the SIS sync won't affect syncing because there is no SIS ID to conflict or cause issues.

Are there any admins who are doing something similar? Or teachers who have set up custom sections for differentiation alongside a SIS sync?
