SpeedGrader auto-selects group for a non-group discussion assignment

Jump to solution

I am experiencing a strange behavior with the SpeedGrader. I have a discussion assignment that is NOT a group assignment. However, when I go to the SpeedGrader from the assignment, I get the following message:

The group "[group name]" was automatically selected because no group was previously chosen. You can change the selected group in the Gradebook."

This only allows me to use the SpeedGrader for a limited number of students in the group that was auto-selected by Canvas. However, this is NOT a group assignment, so it shouldn't do this. Also, I haven't found a way to select a group (or unselect groups) from within the Gradebook as the notification suggests I can.

I'm lost where to turn here to fix this. Of course, I can still grade all the students manually, but I need to fix this bug for future assignments. Does anyone know why this is happening or how I might be able to fix it?

Error message_ "The group [group name] was automatically selected because no group was previously chosen. You can change the selected group in the Gradebook."

george.rowe@bellevuecollege.edu, I've never heard of being able to change this from the gradebook. From your original screenshot, it looks like one group was already created. I'd try going to People --> Groups and look for that group name, "Team Project 1." If you find it, then try adding all students to this group and see if it helps. If not, then Canvas Support is your best bet for getting this figured out.

george.rowe@bellevuecollege.edu, the first thing I would double-check are your discussion settings. Click on the discussion so you are in the discussion, then click on the "Edit" button. Scroll down and look at what is selected for Group Discussion. Is the "This is a group discussion" selected? If so, then that's the issue - I'm not 100% sure how to fix this, but I'm wondering if you added a group with the whole class in it, if that would fix it. As to how it happened, it might have happened on accident or if you used groups on this discussion in a previous course that this might have been copied from. If this isn't the issue or you can't figure out how to fix it, then I would contact Canvas Support. You can do this by clicking the Help link in Canvas and "Report a Problem."

So, the option to set it as a Group Assignment is hidden from options on the Edit screen for the discussion. This makes me think that perhaps it was locked as a group assignment after the first post from a student. However, when you go to the discussion itself, it doesn't show it as a group assignment at the top (I think it normally does). Also, do you (or anyone) know how to select a new group from the Gradebook? According to the notification I'm getting, I can do this, but I haven't found that option in the Gradebook. If I can select a new group, your idea of creating a group that includes all students might be the best hack for this particular assignment.

I just encountered the same problem.  And I finally figured out how to fix it.  The way to fix it is to change the setting by deselecting " Launch SpeedGrader Filtered by Student Group" .

Thx! Solve the problem.
