Student Names in Inbox don't match the roster

As of this semester, names of students sending and replying to email, as well as my drop-down options for sending, show only the student's nicknames. These don't show up in People or Gradebook. I now literally have to compare tiny pictures to find out who the heck is this "Raven" who just emailed me about his/her grade. Is this a configurable option, by me or my institution? It is intolerable.
