Students able to exceed 80 characters on fill in the blank questions

I recently gave a quiz that had several fill in the blank questions. I specifically chose fill in the blank so students would need to answer concisely. However, the students found they could exceed that character limit. Not only does this not encourage the students to be concise, but when they exceed the character limit by a large amount it also makes it difficult to grade these questions as the grader can only see a single line of the answer. I just tested this on a test quiz and I can find no evidence of any character limit on the fill in the blank questions. Can someone help me resolve this or point to another question type that has a character limit?
