@reidbyrd , in addition to what Chris provided, I had two thoughts. My first was to add your student guides as files in Canvas. If you do this then you can easily decide when to release them to students - How do I restrict files and folders to students in Canvas? My second thought was to put the study guide (link to the Google Doc) in a separate Module with a lock date so that way the students couldn't access until the correct date/time - How do I lock a module?
Hope this helps!
Hi @reidbyrd ...
If I am understanding your question correctly, you have some study guides housed in Google Docs that you want to link to or embed in Canvas, but you essentially would like them with limited time access (maybe start and end dates like you can do with Quizzes). I did a brief Google search to see if I could find anything that might meet your needs, but I didn't come up with anything promising that would be a quick and easy solution. There was this article, Google Docs lets you limit access with an expiration date, but it requires Google Apps...which I have next to no knowledge about.
Have you considered using anything besides Google Docs? What about Dropbox? In doing another Google search, I came across this help article: How can I set an expiration for a shared link? - Dropbox Help - Dropbox (US). Do you think this might meet your needs?
Thanks. I will look into these options. I have used Moodle for the last 8
years and anything that was loaded into Moodle had the option to put a date
and time it would open and close. Canvas has that for quizzes and
assignments, but not for files. I hope I can find a work around. Thanks for
your help.

This is exactly what I need ( How do I restrict files and folders to
students in Canvas? <https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-2770> ),
thanks.

Yay! Glad I was able to help!
Another question. Is there a way to have the file open in a new tab instead
of being downloaded?

Yep, highlight the word(s) you want to create a link to (so the name of the file or what you want to name the file), click Ctrl+K, and then fill in the fields - specifically for Target change it to "new window."
Hope this helps!
It opens a new window, but still requires you to download it. I want it to
open in a new window like a Google Doc would. If the students download it
on their computer there is always the possibility they could try to cheat
while taking the test. Any ideas?
