What does it technically mean for a student to be marked as "inactive"?

Jump to solution

What does that do to a student's ability to post in discussion forums and take quizzes? When is a student marked as "inactive"? Can a student go from inactive to active?

@mattwyndham , normally inactive students can view the course in a read-only format. So they can see things, but they can't "do" anything in the course. So they can't participate in discussions or take quizzes. Normally this is an admin level feature for students who drop or are withdrawn from a course.  This guide explains more about this and how to re-activate a student - https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-13120-4152481702

Hope this helps! Kona

Hi brilliant and always helpful  @kona ‌, I was searching for information about inactive status and came upon your answer.  In the page you reference, it says "does not allow the student to access course content", and that's my experience.  They cannot enter the course and don't see it any more in their list of courses.  They get an "access denied" error if they use a link to the course, so doesn't look like they can view the course in read-only format.  Just to clarify!  Maybe I am missing something!

@Nancy_Webb_CCSF  , you are correct - an inactive student can no longer see nor participate in a course.

The big advantage of inactivation is that the student can easily be reactivated which will also reactivate any graded submissions and resulting grades.

Thanks for confirming,  @kmeeusen ‌.  You are also a brilliant resource here on the forums!

Do you know if all course notifications will NOT be sent to inactive students?  I tested announcements and it doesn't send a notification, but the documentation only mentions notifications about assignment comments, not other types of notifications. https://s3.amazonaws.com/tr-learncanvas/docs/CanvasEnrollmentStatusComparison.pdf

@Nancy_Webb_CCSF  , as far as I know, that PDF is correct and inactive students should not receive notifications.
