What happened to the message link on the people page?

Jump to solution

What happened to the message link on the people page? I used it last semester. I inherited classes that an adjunct had set up. The message link is not there this semester. Is there something I need to do to put it there?

Kona,

First of all thanks for you help and quick response. I like the canvas

community, nice place to be. Advice was given to use the activity report

section that does have a mail link to each student. Any port in a storm.

Thanks again,

floyd.hatcher@cisco.edu - I don't remember a message link from the People tab; however, there is the Student interaction report on the right side of People and next to each student is the message icon.  Is this what you are remembering?

Thanks, Sam

No that's not what I had last semester. The classes I had were set up by

another teacher, an adjunct, but due to enrollment I had to take the

classes and it was there. Thanks for your tip though, it will help.

If you find out more information about what you were seeing last semester (if it was some type of add-on or special thing for your Institution) please let us know!

floyd.hatcher@cisco.edu, I don't believe there is a direct way to message students from People. I know that depending on how your specific Institution has their Instructor Permissions set up you might be able to click on the name of a student and under "Ways to contact" click on the Message icon. Yet, for our specific Institution I know this feature (unfortunately) isn't available to faculty because it's tied into another feature that we have turned off for faculty. Smiley Sad

I did some searching and found two related feature ideas - & - both of which imply that there isn't an easy way for Instructors to directly message students other than to use the Inbox.

If you did have this feature last semester and now don't, my only thought is that settings at your Institution might have changed. To double-check on this you would want to contact your Canvas Help Desk directly. I did a quick search and found the following contact information - Cisco College - Help for Faculty

Hope this helps!

The classes were already set up when I took them over last semester and I

don't know who set up what – I just know there was a message link after

selecting a student from the people page. Oh well, it is what it is.

Messaging through the ways to contact me take you out of canvas and the

student has control over contact, not my idea of ideal. SO, what do we have

to do to get a message link on the bio page of a student from the people

page?

I used it extensively last year and would love to have it back.

I talked with our canvas dept. and they assure me it wasn't there – I guess

I was dreaming all last semester but it sure was a good dream.

floyd.hatcher@cisco.edu, sorry to hear that there's no easy fix for this. What I do to message students is either contact them through the Canvas Inbox (which forwards out to their various contact methods of choice) or through the "Message Students Who" from the gradebook (this is only good if you are trying to contact specific students who didn't do an assignment, scored low, scored high, haven't submitted yet, etc). Not perfect, but it works.

Thanks Kona,

There do seem to be multiple ways to contact individual students. It's just

that the message link on the bio page from the people page was so handy and

quick. I miss my message line :(. I will get over it.

If there is a way to put it back I would love to see it there.
