i just downloaded the app for the first time and noticed that it notifies students EVERY time i make a change - add a reading, change a video, etc etc. this is not helpful for students. i think they should automatically be notified about announcements and grades. i want them to be able to see the shells of modules so they get a sense of the course, but i cant do this without publishing the module. i dont think they should get micro notifications about each change within that module. sometimes instructors don't post every material by the first day of class. the browser gives us options to not notify users of content update, but the app notifies anyway.
Notifications are set up by individuals. In other words, students control which notifications they receive. So the best advice would be to let your students know how they can set their own notification preferences if they don't want those updates. Here is a guide for students on how to do that which you can share with them https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Student-Guide/How-do-I-set-my-Canvas-notification-preferences-as-... There is also a new feature which lets users set different notification settings per class. Information on that can be found at the following link; however it may or may not be enabled yet at your school since it is kinda new https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Student-Guide/How-do-I-manage-notifications-for-a-single-course-a...
i don't actually think this should be auto enabled for every student to receive every notification. it really ignores the reality of course building - which is rarely ever "done" on time
