@lumartinez , greetings! When you created the assignment for your chapter test, did you create it as a "quiz" or as an "assignment." It sounds like you created it as a quiz (for type). If you did, then that is the problem. The only way you can assign a point value to a quiz (legacy quizzes) is by adding actual questions to the quiz. If the students don't take the quiz in Canvas, then you'd want to create an Assignment for the Chapter test.
