vary group assignments

I would like to know how to vary assignment specifics given to groups of students such that each group gets the same overview assignment but with a different detail to work on. The way i did this in Blackboard was to create and number the groups and let them assign themselves, then the assignment details were also numbered. When they are allowed to create their own groups in Canvas are the groups given a number?
