Starting June, LTI usage reporting will become a built-in part of the core Canvas experience. Previously available only through our premium products, Intelligent Insights and Impact, this reporting will now be accessible to all Canvas Admins – no additional purchase required. As part of the upcoming Canvas Apps experience, LTI Usage will appear under a new "Monitor" tab, accessible both directly via Apps from the Admin tray and via the Analytics Hub. Just like today, it will provide visibility into which of the most commonly used LTI tools are being used, where, when, and by whom – along with filters that help answer the real questions admins are asking.

Inspired by Your Feedback

Canvas Admins have long asked for better visibility into LTI tool usage. Last year, we responded with the launch of LTI Usage Data dashboard within Intelligent Insights, addressing that need head-on. But from the start, one message stood out: this type of reporting shouldn’t be a premium add-on – it should be a core part of Canvas.

We heard your feedback, and with this change, making LTI usage reporting available to all Canvas customers. We’re acting directly on that feedback.

Why This Matters

This update is about more than just access. By integrating LTI Usage Data directly into Canvas, we’re removing barriers and ensuring every institution can benefit from these insights. Admins will now have a clearer view of how the most commonly used LTI tools are used across their ecosystems, enabling smarter planning, better support, and greater transparency.

What Happens Next

We’re targeting the production rollout in June. There’s no action required on your part – it will be default on for all Canvas instances on production release day. Once live, LTI Usage reporting will be readily available in the Monitor tab of the new Canvas Apps experience, while also remaining accessible through the Analytics Hub.

We’re excited to take this step forward with you and grateful for the input that shaped this update. Your feedback continues to drive meaningful improvements to the Canvas experience.

To stay up to date on LTI Usage Reporting as it becomes part of core Canvas, keep an eye on the Canvas Release Notes, where future updates will be posted. This Blog Post, Introducing the Enhanced Canvas Apps Experience provides more detailed information.

We are also continuing to expand Intelligent Insights to support more users and use cases. This includes integrating LTI launch information into modules like Course Readiness and Ask Your Data, along with other enhancements designed to bring greater clarity to education data. More details will be coming soon on this blog and as always, will continue to be communicated through the Intelligent Insights release notes.

Exciting update 😃
I'm not able to open the link to the blog post "Introducing the Enhanced Canvas Apps Experience."

It gives the error: "The article you are trying to access is not available."

Thanks!

Thank you! More and more of the faculty and student experience is happening indirectly in the LMS and needing to purchase an add-on (or develop something in-house) in order to have even a high-level overview was not fair.

Can you please fix the broken link in the "What Happens Next" section of this post? Thank you!

@KathyPalm @dbrace @Debra-Sheridan Sorry about that! We were off by a bit on publishing them, the second article is live now.

Great (long awaited) addition to the Canvas toolbox!. Could you clarify @GergelyTar whether it monitors ALL LTI tools and not just vendor-provided ones?

@pgo586 It will support the LTI tools listed in the "What is the current availability of data in LTI Usage?" article. The article also explains a bit about why we're limited in which tools we can support right now.

Thanks @AlexisNast for confirming that (I was suspecting it but wanted to confirm). I'd be interested in seeing a description of the steps that need to be taken by a home-grown tool (not vendor-provided, but created by the institution and not shared with other institutions) in order for the tool's usage data to be potentially reflected in the new LTI Usage feature.

This decision does not allow any business stakeholders to view Canvas analytics anymore as they cannot have sys admin roles. What a shame.
