Introducing the New Functionality: Backpack Available from LTI

We are pleased to announce the return of the Backpack feature within the LTI 1.3 integration for Canvas users. Previously available in LTI 1.1, this functionality is back to provide a streamlined way for learners to view, manage, and share their earned badges directly within the Canvas platform. This integration enhances the badge management experience, making it more accessible and efficient for both students and administrators.

Enhancing Student Engagement with Centralised Badge Management

Imagine a student who has just earned a new badge. With the LTI 1.3 Backpack, they can now see all their badges in one place, right within Canvas. This central hub not only makes it easier for students to access their achievements but also encourages them to engage more with their learning journey.

Key Benefits for You and Your Students

  • Streamlined Access: Students no longer need to switch between platforms. They can manage and showcase their achievements directly within Canvas, making their accomplishments more visible and engaging.
  • Increased Engagement: By having badges readily accessible, students are more likely to take pride in their achievements, leading to higher engagement and motivation.
  • Simplified Credentialing: Your credentialing program becomes more cohesive, with badges that are easier to track and manage, enhancing the overall value and recognition of your micro-credentials.

Understanding the Limitations:

While the LTI 1.3 Backpack offers significant convenience, there are a few limitations to be aware of:

  • No Import Functionality: The LTI 1.3 Backpack does not support importing external achievements. Badges earned from other sources or awarded to different email addresses cannot be imported into this integration.
  • Email Address Restriction: Only badges awarded to the email address with which the learner is enrolled at your institution will be displayed. Any badges awarded to other email addresses will not appear within the LTI 1.3 integration.

These functionalities will continue to be available in the standalone Backpack product, ensuring that all your badge management needs are met comprehensively.

Why This Integration Matters:

The reintroduction of the Backpack feature in LTI 1.3 is a straightforward yet impactful update. By making badge management seamless, you empower your students to take full advantage of their achievements, which can lead to:

  • Lower Dropout Rates: Engaged students who see their progress and achievements are more likely to stay motivated and complete their courses.
  • Higher Retention Rates: When students are actively involved in their learning journey, they are more likely to persist in their studies, enhancing overall retention.
  • Stronger Credentialing Programs: Easy access to badges helps students appreciate the value of their credentials, strengthening the impact and recognition of your program.

Super stuff.

I also kind of hoped that the reason for reintroducing the LTI1.3 backpack might be the prelude to credentials, pathways and the student portfolio being brought closer together...?

@GideonWilliams Absolutely right! We are also bringing together these pieces, and the backpack functionality will be the first step of those!
