Growing with Canvas Updates

Thanks to Erin Keefe  andSallie Michalsky as well as the rest of theCanvas Training team for developing wonderful, free resource such as the Be The Hero - New Training Course for Canvas Admins!  for Canvas Admins and Growing with Canvas - New Training Course.  If you have not seen these resources yet, get  your copy in the Canvas Commons.  Check out the helpful guides for the commons here:  Guides: Commons.  

Once you import this resource into a shell, you will receive notifications when this course has been updated.  You can ask questions and get more information about these updates here and choose if you wish to import those updates to your course. 

TIP:  If you customized the Growing with Canvas course and you import the update, the entire course will be rewritten with that update.  It is best to pull the updated course into a new shell and copy the update to change specifically into your customized course.

August 30, 2018 - Update to Commons: 

In this version, we have made a few updates for enhanced accessibility:

1. Adjusted header tags to be in order on the page H1, H2, H3.

2. Removed tables used for the purpose of layout.

3. Ensured all items marked as decorative images were decorative and adjusted with alt tags.

November 8, 2018 - Recommendations until Next Update

The docs team has revised some of the video guides. The changes to the video guides are affecting the following embedded videos in the current version of Growing with Canvas. Details and recommendations are listed below. See the Action Needed column for steps you can take if you've already downloaded Growing with Canvas.

July 17, 2019 - Update to Commons

In this version we have made the following updates:

1.  Added the New Gradebook Video in 4.61:  523 - New Gradebook Overview on Vimeo 

2.  Included an overview of differences between the legacy and new gradebook

3.  Added resources to learn more about the New Gradebook including the New Gradebook Users Group

September 10, 2019 - Update to Commons

In this version we made the following updates:

1.  The link to 'How Are You Growing with Canvas' located on 6.1 | A Few Final Thoughts was repaired.  

Action Needed - If you are manually updating your course, replace that with this new link: How Are You Growing with Canvas? 

May 13, 2020 - Update to Commons

1. Page 4.6 updated for current Gradebook
2. Page 4.6.1 removed as redundant. 

Action Needed - If you are manually updating your course, make sure to update the content using information for the current Gradebook. 

July 6, 2020 - Update to Commons

1.  Page 2.5.1 New Rich Content Editor information added.  As a result, language in the unpublished notes to the admins have also been updated to help them choose which content RCE version to keep in the course.  Those pages are

It looks like there were also changes made to the 4.6 | Your Canvas Gradebook to reflect the Legacy Gradebook and New Gradebook in the July 17, 2019 update.

Is there a replacement for the Creating Hyperlinks With The Rich Content Editor 
link in the digging deeper section located in 2.5?

Hi all,

I've set up the course (I am using the Badgr badges for module completion). When I try to use "student view" to test, it doesn't award the badge. I have some screenshots here of the first module criteria and the badge criteria. Can anybody tell me what I am doing wrong? Cheers.

The module requirements indicate that the 1.5 Customize Your Profile and 1.8 Try the Calendar, and 1.9 Quiz must be submitted before the module is considered complete for earning the badge.  If you do NOT wish to require those then that settings must be changed in the module requirements.

I am also using the Growing with Canvas course and did similar testing with the "Test Student" (student view). I found that no badges are awarded. My only reasoning at to why is that "student view" allows you to interact and see as a student, but often does not play well with 3rd party tools, like Badgr, because it's not really a student in the course. I have found while testing many other 3rd party tools that "student view" only works with internal Canvas items for actually tracking completion, submissions, grades, etc. To bypass this issue, we have a couple of dummy student accounts we use for testing purposes and they receive badges just fine when we tested the course using them instead of "student view." I suggest a similar course of action, especially when trying to test the integration of 3rd party tools.

There are several videos that aren't showing up on the Growing with Canvas Course pages, such as this one attached on 2.3 course settings or 3.5 Assignments Overview.  Any advice on how to have these resources load properly or if I could get the direct links, I could embed them myself?

Curious if Growing with Canvas will be updated before the start of summer in 2021? 

We have some division leaders wanting new staff to take this course.

Could we possibly get updates with Growing with Canvas? So many amazing updates in Canvas the past year and want to use this to train our new faculty (and even our returning faculty, honestly) this summer!  But I was a bit surprised to see that the last update was last summer.
