How do I use the Data Explorer?

You can initiate a data exploration from an existing chart, a scoreboard, and an existing exploration. You can also start a new exploration.

Start New Exploration

Open Existing Exploration

To start a new exploration, click the Start Exploring link.

Open Existing Exploration

Open Existing Exploration

Alternatively, you can open a recent or a saved exploration. To open a recent exploration, click the Recent link [1].

To open a saved exploration, click the Created by You link [2].

Then click the name of the exploration you want to view [3].

Begin Exploration from Chart

To open the Data Explorer from a chart, click the chart in the dashboard [1]. In the sidebar, click the Explore link [2].

Open Metrics

Open Metrics

When starting a new exploration, click the Choose Metric button.

Select Metrics

Select Metrics

In the Metrics page, click the metric type you want to explore [1], then click the metric name [2]. You can also search for a metric [3].

To select multiple metrics, click the Select Multiple checkbox [4].

For more information about a metric, hover over the metric name [5].

When ready, click the OK button [6].

The first level is always the Metrics level. An exploration always begins with choosing the data metric to be explored. It is possible to change this at any time, and even add additional data items, by clicking on the gear icon. You can also click the level first, which will highlight it with a red border, and then click Edit from the sidebar.

Let’s see what happens. In the image below, I’ve selected the Metrics level and clicked on Edit in the sidebar.  Then I’ve hit the checkbox at the bottom of the displayed popup to enable multiple selections. Finally, I’ve selected the Absences per Student box.

Select Items

Select Items

To select items, click the checkbox next to the item name [1].

To select all items in the list, click the Select All checkbox [2].

Then click the OK button [3].

Note: Selecting no items is effectively the same as selecting all items, because no items is interpreted as not applying the filter.
