You can initiate a data exploration from an existing chart, a scoreboard, and an existing exploration. You can also start a new exploration.
Start New Exploration
To start a new exploration, click the Start Exploring link.
Open Existing Exploration
Alternatively, you can open a recent or a saved exploration. To open a recent exploration, click the Recent link .
To open a saved exploration, click the Created by You link .
Then click the name of the exploration you want to view .
Begin Exploration from Chart
To open the Data Explorer from a chart, click the chart in the dashboard . In the sidebar, click the Explore link .
When starting a new exploration, click the Choose Metric button.
In the Metrics page, click the metric type you want to explore , then click the metric name . You can also search for a metric .
To select multiple metrics, click the Select Multiple checkbox .
For more information about a metric, hover over the metric name .
When ready, click the OK button .
The first level is always the Metrics level. An exploration always begins with choosing the data metric to be explored. It is possible to change this at any time, and even add additional data items, by clicking on the gear icon. You can also click the level first, which will highlight it with a red border, and then click Edit from the sidebar.
Let’s see what happens. In the image below, I’ve selected the Metrics level and clicked on Edit in the sidebar. Then I’ve hit the checkbox at the bottom of the displayed popup to enable multiple selections. Finally, I’ve selected the Absences per Student box.
Filter Selected Metrics
By default, metrics added to an exploration represent the summary of information globally in the data warehouse. To filter the selected metrics, click the Filter button.
In the Filter Category Items window, click the filter type , then select the filter .
To view a list of your recent or frequently applied filters, click the Recent or Popular links .
By default, the Filter Category window only displays applicable filters. To view all filter options, deselect the Show only categories that applicable to each of the selected metrics checkbox . To view hidden categories, click the Show hidden categories checkbox .
Click the OK button .
To select items, click the checkbox next to the item name .
To select all items in the list, click the Select All checkbox .
Then click the OK button .
Note: Selecting no items is effectively the same as selecting all items, because no items is interpreted as not applying the filter.
View Filtered Data
View the filtered data in the Data Explorations page.
Note: Selected filters with no data are automatically excluded from the chart.
Categorize Selected Metrics
To categorize the selected metrics, click the Categorize button.
In the Select Category window, click the category type , then select the category .
To view a list of your recent or frequently used categories, click the Recent or Popular links . You can also search for a category in the Search field .
By default, the Select Category window only displays applicable categories. To view all filter options, deselect the Show only categories that applicable to each of the selected metrics checkbox . To view hidden categories, click the Show hidden categories checkbox .
Then click the OK button .
View Categorized Data
View the categorized data in the Data Explorations page.
Note: Selected categories with no data are automatically excluded from the chart.
View Chart Options
To move a chart up in the exploration, click the Move Up icon .
To modify a chart's filters or categories, click the Modify icon .
To collapse the chart view, click the Collapse icon .
To delete the chart from the exploration, click the Remove icon .
The first chart in the exploration does not display a Move Up icon.
Chart deletion cannot be undone. To view a removed chart, you must recreate it in your exploration.
You can collapse all charts in the Actions sidebar.
View What's Next Options
In the What's Next field you can refine the exploration , disaggregate the data , or filter the data using Key Performance Indicators (KPI) .
Apply Top N Filter
Select the metric in the Metric drop-down menu . Select Top or Bottom in the Order drop-down menu . Enter a number in the Number field . Then click the OK button .
Disaggregate Chart Data
To disaggregate, or drill-down, into an existing categorized item and expand the results, click the chart item.
You can then use the categories or filters to further explore the data.
