Using enCASE Kiosk to Secure Testing 

When students take online assessments in a standard browser (such as Edge, Chrome, Safari, Firefox, etc.), they are still able to access other internet sites and other applications while taking the test. If you want to prevent this kind of digital cheating for specific benchmark assessments or local classroom assessments, you may secure the testing environment through enCASE Kiosk which:

  • Displays assessments full-screen only.
  • Provides only Back, Forward, Refresh, and Stop for browser menus and toolbar options.
  • Prevents access to other applications such as messaging, screen-sharing, virtual machines, and remote desktops (with the optional exception of video conferencing software for remote proctoring on PCs and Macs). See enCASE Kiosk FAQ for more details on using video conferencing. 
  • Prevents print and screen capture functions during the test.
  • Prevents copying and pasting during the test.
  • Disallows right-click menu options, functions keys, keyboard shortcuts, and task switching.
  • Prevents assessments from opening with a standard browser. 

Supported devices include:

  • Windows/PCs and Macs
  • Chromebooks (district-managed Chromebooks only)

Note: iPads, student-owned Chromebooks, and Android tablets are not currently supported.

Getting Started

A secure testing experience is provided through enCASE Kiosk, which must be set up on whatever devices students will be using to take assessments, whether PCs and Macs or Chromebooks. For instructions on installation, refer to the enCASE Kiosk Setup and File Download Page

Securing Benchmark Testing

Provided your district has contacted us, and students or lab managers have installed enCASE Kiosk appropriately, administrators may secure testing for specific benchmark assessments. (Teachers and administrators may also secure classroom assessments.)

Secure Benchmark Testing When Assigning for Schools

During the benchmark scheduling process (as described in Scheduling CASE Benchmark Assessments), an administrator assigns assessments to schools by making selections on the Assign Schools page. To secure the testing experience for an assessment, log in as administrator and check the box for "Require enCASE Kiosk" next to the appropriate school on the Assign Schools page.

To turn off the secure testing requirement, administrators may choose Assign Schools from the Assessments menu, find the assessment, and un-check "Require enCASE Kiosk."

Confirm When Viewing Classroom Schedules

When looking at benchmark assessment schedules for classrooms, you can see whether secure testing is being required for that assessment at that school, where the options says "Require enCASE Kiosk." It is read-only. (If changes are needed, an administrator must make them on the Assign Schools page.)

Securing Classroom Testing

When you schedule a classroom assessment, you may require the enCASE Kiosk. Refer to Scheduling a Classroom Assessment for details.

Exempting Certain Students

If secure testing is required for an assessment, every student takes the assessment in the locked experience (see "The Student Experience," below). However, if there are some students who are unable to install the software, have student-owned Chromebooks, or have difficulty with the experience in any way, an administrator can turn off the requirement for those students. 

To exempt a student from the secured testing requirement:

  1. Edit the student's user account. (Choose Users or choose Manage Schools followed by Manage School and go to the "Manage Student" section.)
  2. In the "Student Security" section, check the box for Exempt from enCASE Kiosk.

Click Save All when you are finished.

The Student Experience

The secure testing student experience differs slightly, depending on whether the student is using a Mac, PC, or a Chromebook.

Using a PC or Mac

When an assessment requires secure testing through enCASE Kiosk, students log into enCASE and see their available assessments on their dashboard, as described in the Student Experience article. They can click Take Assessment for any available assessment. (Those with a "lock" icon are those that require secure testing.)

After clicking Take Assessment, they see a dialog box such as the following, asking to launch LockDown Browser OEM:

Students should click Open LockDown Browser OEM.

LockDown Browser launches. (If LockDown Browser is not installed, an error appears or nothing happens.)

LockDown Browser requests that students close applications that are currently running, via dialog boxes such as the following:

Students may choose Close Process to close the identified application, or they can exit LockDown Browser, close applications, and click Take Assessment again.

Note: LockDown Browser requires that most applications be closed before it opens. However, if your district allows for video conferencing (supported on PCs and Macs), those applications will continue to run in the background. Browsers will also continue to run in the background.

Once LockDown Browser is running, the assessment appears:

The window is full-screen and the navigational controls for the browser are minimal.

At any time, the student may click Exit to close the LockDown Browser window. 

Using a Chromebook

Students should select the enCASE Kiosk icon from the Apps menu in the system tray.

enCASE Kiosk opens in full screen. The student will not have controls to go back or refresh the page. All navigation is controlled from within enCASE.

After submitting their assessment at the end, students must exit the enCASE Kiosk. Depending on their specific Chromebook model, they may need to:

  • Press the power button or
  • Turn off the Chromebook
