7/21/2021: We wanted to inform you all that our release timeline for the new OneDrive integration has been pushed back. We don't know the exact dates, but we are working hard to accelerate the delivery date as much as possible. We are also targeting the release of a full course on the Microsoft Educator Center and Microsoft Learn about the new integrations next month. I've been informed that community members aren't able to comment on this page - so I've been answering questions here: Canvas + Microsoft Upcoming LTI Integrations (canvaslms.com). 7/16/2021: The Teams classes LTI app will be available for all Canvas customers by Friday, 7/23! Microsoft 365 with Canvas
Microsoft 365 already has a number of helpful integrations with Canvas, including:
- Creating a Teams meeting link from the rich content editor
- Creating assignments and using SpeedGrader with Office 365 documents
- Creating OneNote Class Notebooks for each of your Canvas courses
- Leveraging the power of Microsoft's Immersive Reader on Canvas Pages
We are excited to be expanding on these capabilities in Summer 2021 with a collection of new LTI apps for OneDrive, Teams classes (now available!), and Teams meetings (now available). You can view an overview of the existing and new integrations in the attached presentation and get answers to your most pressing questions in the FAQ below.

The wait is over! Microsoft OneDrive LTI is now generally available.
Microsoft OneDrive LTI is now generally available for all Canvas customers. Microsoft OneDrive LTI has rolled out to all customers and is no longer in preview. Microsoft OneDrive LTI brings the best of OneDrive and Office365 directly into Canvas. Educators can access their OneDrive files right within Canvas, add Office 365 files to modules and assignments, and grade Office 365 files in the Canvas SpeedGrader. Students can work on Office 365 cloud assignments, submit OneDrive files directly from Canvas in response to their assignments, and collaborate using Office 365 files within Canvas.
The new Microsoft OneDrive LTI has several exciting new features:
- Users can add multiple OneDrive school accounts
- Fully supports Canvas course copy
- New and improved OneDrive file picker experience
- Link or embed Office 365 files in modules and assignments
- Use Office 365 files in Canvas Collaborations
- And more!

Teams classes LTI for Canvas is here!
You've asked for an easy way for educators to create class Teams for their Canvas courses and the wait is over. Educators will now be able to create class Teams based on the enrollment roster of their courses with appropriate user roles. Once the team is created, educators and students will be able to navigate to their associated class teams directly from their Canvas courses using desktop, mobile, or web platforms.

You can use Microsoft Office 365 to create a collaboration with a Microsoft Word, Excel, or PowerPoint file. You can select individual users, groups, or both as part of a collaboration. To alert invitees about collaborations, you can create course events in the Calendar.
Notes:
- If you cannot create a Microsoft collaboration, this feature has not been enabled for the course.
- Once you invite a user to a collaboration, the collaboration is available to the user in the user's Microsoft OneDrive. Uninviting the user or deleting the collaboration does not remove access to the collaboration once a user has been added.
- When creating a collaboration you cannot link to a previously created collaboration.
Open Collaborations
In Course Navigation, click the Collaborations link.
Add Collaboration
To add a collaboration, click the Start a new collaboration button.
Note: If you do not have any existing collaborations, this button will not display in the Collaborations page.
Select Office 365
In the Collaborate using drop-down menu [1], select the Office 365 option [2].
Log in to Office 365
You may be asked to authenticate your account. Click the Log In button.
In an external window, enter your Office 365 email (or phone number) and password.
Select Type
In the Type drop-down menu, select the type of collaboration you want to create. You can select Word, Excel, or PowerPoint.
Add Details
In the Document Name field [1], enter the name of your document.
In the Description field [2], enter a description for the collaboration.
Add People
The collaboration defaults to the People tab. If you want to collaborate with individual people in your course, click the name of a user you want to add to the collaboration [1]. The user's name will move to the right side of the window [2].
Add as many users as necessary.
Remove Collaborators
To remove a collaborator, click the name of the user [1]. To remove all users, click the Remove All link [2].
Add Groups
You can also create collaborations with groups. To select an entire group, click the Groups tab [1]. Select the group(s) you want to add to the collaboration [2].
Note:
- You can select individual users as well as a group in a collaboration.
- You can add multiple groups to a collaboration, but all groups will collaborate in the same document. For group-specific collaborations, consider creating a new collaboration for each group or creating a group collaboration from within the group.
Save Collaboration
Click the Save button.
View Collaboration
View your collaboration. To edit the collaboration, click the Edit icon [1]. To delete the collaboration, click the Delete icon [2].
If your instructor creates a cloud assignment with a Microsoft OneDrive file, you can open the assignment, edit the document directly, and submit your changes as your assignment submission.
When you open the assignment, Office 365 will create a copy of the file as your submission. You can open the document and make changes per the assignment instructions. When you are ready to submit the assignment, return to the Canvas assignment page and submit the assignment. The copied document is also added to your OneDrive folder for the course.
Cloud assignments are treated the same way as any other type of assignment submission. When you submit your assignment, your instructor will view the assignment exactly as it is when you click the Submit button. Even though cloud assignments can still be modified in the assignment page, any changes you make to the assignment after the submission cannot be viewed by your instructor unless you submit the assignment again as a resubmission.
Note: When the Allow Multiple file AGS submissions count as one submission is enabled, you can select multiple files to be uploaded to a third-party assignment in Canvas. However, some third-party tools may not be built to accommodate this feature.
Open Assignments
In Course Navigation, click the Assignments link.
Open Assignment
Click the name of the assignment.
Open Document Editor
To complete the assignment from the assignments page, click the Edit Document drop-down menu and select Edit [1].
To open the assignment using the corresponding app, select Open in Desktop App [2].
To open the assignment in a separate window, click the Open button [3].
Edit Assignment
Make edits directly to the document as necessary to complete the assignment. Word will periodically save your changes.
Submit Assignment
When you are ready to submit the assignment, verify that all edits have been saved, then close the Word Online window. In the assignment page, click the Submit button.
Confirm Submission
Confirm your assignment was submitted. Click the Finished button.
If you need to make changes, you can edit the assignment again and submit the assignment as a re-submission.
The Microsoft Teams & Canvas Badges/Credentials integration was designed by a Microsoft partner to enable the awarding of a badge directly through the MS Teams app, rather than doing so via the Canvas Badges/Credentials platform. This means that a company can create and/or use a single issuer that can be integrated into an MS Team's app so that members can award badges to other members easily without leaving MS Teams.
Once integrated MS Team group members will be able to select and award badges to other group members. Members access the same predesignated issuer and badges that have been associated with the MS Teams account. Depending on your role, you may or may not be able to create badges. Please check with your IT administrator if you have questions about your role or ability to create badges.
The guide will direct you on how to collect and utilize the necessary information to complete the integration.
Follow the deployment guide to integrate Canvas Badges/Credentials with Microsoft Teams.
As part of step 1, please be sure to let us know which Canvas Credentials server you'd like to connect with: U.S., Canada, Europe, or the Australian server. Otherwise, you'll be connected to the U.S. Canvas Credentials server by default.
Keep in mind that you can award badges through MS Teams but you cannot view collections of badges within teams. To view badges that were previously awarded to individuals or to see the award history, you'll need to access a Canvas Badges/Credentials account.
Note: The MS Teams app must be installed on the group in teams where you intend to award badges. We hope you enjoy using the Canvas Badges/Credentials integration for Microsoft Teams. If you encounter any issues or have any questions, please contact support@badgr.com.
If your course has enabled Microsoft Office 365, you can upload a file from your Microsoft OneDrive for an assignment.
Like other file upload submissions, files uploaded from Office 365 are uploaded into your Canvas user files submissions folder.
Canvas accepts Microsoft Word, Microsoft PowerPoint, Microsoft Excel, and PDF types.
Notes:
- If the Office 365 tab is not available in your submission, your institution has not enabled this feature.
- Canvas will require you to authorize access to your OneDrive account.
- In Office 365 assignments, you can only submit one file for your submission.
- When Office 365 files are uploaded as a submission, later changes made to the file in OneDrive will not be updated in the submission.
- If enabled in your account, Canvas plays a celebration animation when you submit an assignment on time. However, if you prefer, you can disable this feature setting in your user settings.
- If the assignment you are accessing displays differently, your assignment may be using the Assignment Enhancements feature. Please view this guide for more information.
Open Assignments
In Course Navigation, click the Assignments link.
Select Assignment
Click the title of the assignment.
Start Assignment
Click the Start Assignment button.
Open Office 365
Click the Office 365 tab.
Note: If the Office 365 tab is not available, your institution has not enabled this feature.
Attach File
Microsoft Office 365 will display a list of all allowed file types. Click the name of the file [1], then click the Attach File button [2].
Note: When the Allow Multiple file AGS submissions count as one submission is enabled, you can select multiple files to be uploaded to a third-party assignment in Canvas. However, some third-party tools may not be built to accommodate this feature.
Submit Assignment
In the File field [1], confirm your selected file. To select a new file, click the Change button [2].
Click the Submit Assignment button [3].
View Submission Notification
After you submit your assignment, Canvas displays a message notifying you that your submission is processing. You can navigate away from the assignment submission page without disrupting the file upload. You will also receive an email notification when your submission completes processing.
To clear the notification, click the OK button.
View Submission
View the confirmation of your assignment submission.
View Uploading and Failed Submission Icons
If your submission has been queued for upload, an uploading icon displays [1]. This icon also displays for your instructor if they access the assignment before it uploads.
If your submission failed to upload, an upload failed icon displays [2]. Click the download submission link to view the error.

If enabled by your institution, you can sync course data from the People page in your Canvas course to Microsoft Teams.
Notes:
- If the Microsoft Teams integration does not display in your Course Settings, it has not been enabled by your institution.
- When enrollments changes are made in a course that has enabled Microsoft Sync, it may take up to 10 minutes for those changes to sync to Microsoft Teams.
- For the Microsoft Teams sync to work properly, there must be a user with the Teacher, TA, and/or Designer role in Canvas matching an Owner in Teams.
Open Settings
In Course Navigation, click the Settings link.
Open Integrations
Click the Integrations tab.
Enable Integration
To enable to Microsoft Sync integration, click the State button.
Sync Course Data
Once the integration is enabled, a sync to Microsoft Teams will be triggered automatically by any changes to course enrollments. The first time you enabled Microsoft Sync, you may want to trigger a manual sync to ensure all course data is synced with Microsoft Teams.
To view Microsoft Sync details, click the Expand icon [1]. To sync course data with Microsoft Teams, click the Sync Now button [2].
You can also view the sync status [3], date of last sync [4], and any sync errors [5].
Note: When enrollments changes are made in a course that has enabled Microsoft Sync, it may take up to 10 minutes for those changes to sync to Microsoft Teams.
The Microsoft Immersive Reader enhances your reading experience by improving accessibility and boosting reading comprehension. You can use the Microsoft Immersive Reader when viewing the Course Home Page or Syllabus or when viewing an individual assignment or page. For more information about the reader, visit the Microsoft Immersive Reader website.
Notes:
- You can enable Microsoft Immersive for your user account in your User Settings. However, if the feature is on for the entire account, the account preference overrides the user preference, and the user setting has no effect.
- External Tool content embedded in the Rich Content Editor cannot be read by the Immersive Reader.
Open Immersive Reader
When viewing pages, assignments, course home pages, and the syllabus in a course, click the Immersive Reader button.
View Immersive Reader
The Microsoft Immersive Reader displays a variety of tools and options to enhance your reading experience.
You can manage text, grammar, and reading preferences using the toolbar [1]. To expand the reader display, click the Full Screen button [2].
To hear the page text read aloud, click the Play button [3]. To adjust audio settings, click the Voice Settings button [4].
To close the reader and return to Canvas, click the Exit button [5].
Note: For more details about the Microsoft Immersive Reader functionality, visit the Microsoft Immersive Reader website.
You can create an online assignment that embeds a document directly from your Microsoft Office 365 (OneDrive) folder. Accepted assignment types are Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.
When students open the assignment, Office 365 will create a copy of the file as the student’s submission. Students can open the document and make changes per the assignment instructions. When they are ready to submit the assignment, they can return to the Canvas assignment page and submit the assignment. The copied document is also added to the student’s OneDrive folder for the course. You can also view each student's document copy in SpeedGrader for grading.
Submitted assignments are converted to a PDF to show the assignment at the time of submission. If students made any changes to their assignment, they will have to resubmit it for the changes to be visible in SpeedGrader.
The Microsoft Office 365 LTI currently includes a few limitations when creating assignments:
- You cannot use Microsoft Office 365 files in an external tool for group assignments.
- If you want to use a Canvas rubric for the assignment, you must add the rubric before setting the External Tool submission type. Create the assignment with any other submission type, save the assignment, add the rubric, and then edit the assignment to select the External Tool.
- If you want your assignment to be moderated, you must set up the moderated assignment before setting the External Tool submission type. If you need to return to the moderate page after the External Tool is added, open the assignment and add /moderate after the assignment URL.
Open Assignments
In Course Navigation, click the Assignments link.
Add Assignment
Click the Add Assignment button.
Add Assignment Details
Enter the number of points for the assignment [1], select the Assignment Group [2], and select the grading type from the Display Grade as menu [3].
Note: When adding a Microsoft Office 365 assignment it overwrites the title and description in the assignment settings.
Select Submission Type
In the Submission Type drop-down menu, select the External Tool option.
Note: If you want to use a Canvas rubric for the assignment, you must add the rubric before setting the External Tool submission type. Additionally, if you want to apply moderated grading, you must set up moderated grading before setting the External Tool submission type.
Find External Tool
Click the Find button.
Configure External Tool
Locate and select Office 365 Cloud Assignment [1].
If you want the assignment to load in a new tab, click the Load in a new tab checkbox [2]. Click the Select button [3].
Attach File
Locate and select the file you want to link to the assignment [1]. Click the Attach File button [2].
Select Tool
In the External Tool window, view the URL for your assignment file [1]. To select a different file, click the Office 365 link again.
If you want the assignment to load in a new tab, click the Load in a new tab checkbox [2].
Click the Select button [3].
Save and Publish
If you are ready to publish your assignment, click the Save & Publish button [1]. If you want to create a draft of your assignment and publish it later, click the Save button [2].
View Assignment
View the assignment.
