Interested in hearing user's perspectives on integrating TurnitIn with Canvas. I have seen the videos but want to know if it is worth paying the additional cost. Additionally, we have been told we will need a secondary license (not just HS) in order to do the Canvas integration. Is this similar to your experience as well? Bob

Chris- found that when I try to add the individual course calendar feed using Test Student, it doesn't display on Google Calendar. Not sure if this is a bug or not b/c I also added myself to another Canvas course and added calendar events. They do not display on the my Google Canvas calendar (which is the global feed). The new events are included when I open the feed link (.ics) and view in Calendar app but not in Google (even after refeshing Google Calendar). Will keep testing these options.

We have tried different programs through SCORM but limited how you can embed the SoftChalk / Articulate- they come in as an Assignment through SCORM which is limiting. Wish had a better way to embed similar to video and other LTI tools.

1. What is the most important thing you wish you knew about Canvas in a K-12 environment before you transitioned to/started off in Canvas? Would you do anything different if you were doing it now? We started our contract in January and have offical roll-out this August but have been working with curriculum and school teams this spring. Here are a few of the top items: There is not an efficient ways to "copy" pages (e.g., doesn't work like a template)- when you copy a page and edit, it impacts BOTH pages (original and the copy) Gradebook does not work well for elementary schemes (we are working toward a custom solution) - cannot add a grade directly into gradebook without creating an assignment Outcomes can only be tied to a rubric- you cannot tie an outcome directly to an assignment without a rubric being used (this is limiting our ability to get people to adopt) RCE needs some updates (div tags give us issues); we had to develop our own CSS to have pages display properly on a mobile device Some permissions are "lumped" together so cannot be broken out (e.g., if you give permission for people to add event they can also delete any event- not just the one they create) App doesn't have same functionality (iOS vs Android) and some features not available (as can find in the web version) 2. What is the most useful thing someone DID tell you/help you learn that made the transition easier? Using Points of Contacts (POCs) for training across schools and grade levels Started development with curriculum teams and school admins- their buy-in has been important before we officially go live this fall Work through use cases for roles, org structure, curriculum dev philosophy, etc. 3. What do you consider the BEST quality about Canvas for K-12 users? What is your proudest K-12 Canvas usecase/feature/moment? Ease of use for students, staff, admins Lots of options to make items interactive and use LTI tools (like the audio and video as well) Our staff ❤️ SpeedGrader 4. What do you think is the WORST quality of Canvas specific to online K-12 users? Voting for features is not my favorite- it would be better to view roadmaps for tools that can prioritize within those product teams Because it is software as service, some features cannot be changed or renamed b/c everyone is on the same instance I outlined other pain points above- it is more geared to "let everyone do what they want" and not much in regard to working / selecting templates, etc.

Thanks Chris- interesting that when I "turn off" a calendar view in Canvas that the feed still shows all calendars in the Google shared calendar view. I don't know if it would be better to have separate Canvas feeds for each course but if you had several enrollments it is either see all or see none. Bob

Brad- yes, they self-enroll. The courses have teacher content (not student materials yet) and discussions and events around the curriculum. We don't envision the teacher copying in the teacher materials to the student courses but as creating "student facing" plan to publish to Commons to allow teachers to search and import. Bob

Brad, We have created courses in Canvas that are used as communities. Teachers are enrolling through Canvas Catalog function. We have all curriculum communities "open" so that teachers can see prior course or previous grade level. We are also having the communities track important PL events and resources. Bob

Our K-12 is rolling out K-12 with teacher materials through curriculum communities that users can join based on what they teach. In addition, they will have "student courses" generated as well as a school community. We understand the Canvas calendar is an instructional calendar b/c primarily tied to assignments. Here are a few things am interested in hearing how folks are approaching: Because there is not a Global calendar, how are you displaying system-wide events? Within a school community differentiating how to display items for faculty versus what parents would see (schools now have Google calendars on their public webpages) Are there any good apps that consolidate many of the calendar feeds (e.g., Canvas and Google) into one view?
