I need this also.  I cannot imagine that it can be so difficult for a good programmer to fix this.  Is canvas trying to become as bad as blackboard at product support?  

This does not work in quiz creation.  I tried it and it comes out with the tags showing and no enumerated list (outline) at all.Also, your "solutiion" does not produce letter labeled enumerations down...

I wish I could vote for this a thousand times.  The Canvas philosophy is fundamentally flawed on this issue.
