In Blackboard it is easy to arranged one's gradebook categories by moving them up and down a list. In Canvas the manual move is awkward and difficult, especially if you have a lot of categories and assignments in your course that run across the grade book page and you have to scroll left or right.
But if one of the sorting options was by assignment type, this would be helpful. So, any assignment group would have all of its sub-assignments next to one another across the gradebook. That is, all the "quizzes" would be sorted together by date, then maybe all discussion forums, etc.
In any case, adding that sorting option seems desirable to me. I can sort by date and module but not by assignment type. Can that be added?

This is a helpful thread. I found using a different browser helped but we cannot ask students to switch browsers or refresh their pages. I hope this can be fixed. Wendy

I have found the Weekly/Unit overviews very helpful for laying out a road map for that unit. I break the week into days/groups of days to encourage them to stay active in the class and not post at 11:55 PM on the last day. I include links to the relevant discussion forums and documents in that unit's module. That said, I know, as some of you experience as well, that students too often skip these as unnecessary and then end up confused as to what they should be doing. I keep my modules in a consistent format but with undergrads, I find only a small percentage really get the active nature of online courses and are independent enough to stay on top of them. The weekly overview can be a helpful tool for all students if they use it. I have not made it the home page but that is aa thought. It would involve changing the home page every unit, however. Thanks to those of you who shared images of your weekly overview page. I like the formatting and have never been terribly successful at getting creative layouts here. I do include images to break up text.

This is a good idea. I sometimes was to play around with a participation grade to see if raising or lowering it has a significant effect on the student's final grade. When doing the final grading students get very interested and notice any little change so I would rather the back end be opaque to them until the instructor has finalized the grades.

I concur with Matthew here. Blackboard allows for these options so it makes complete sense that Canvas implement it as quickly as possible. Wendy Turgeon

I agree that this option (to show letter only, % only, or both) would be very desirable. WendyTurgeon On Tue, Mar 21, 2017 at 12:58 PM, mmikulski@thefsi.us <

Yes, I like being able to add a numerical grade or a calculated numerical grade but set it so that the student only sees a letter based on our grading scheme. If I want to see the original number, I can do so. I see a lot of support for this option!

I completely agree here and for all the same reasons. Blackboard allows users to choose number, letter, or both. Canvas should definitely implement this suggestion. On Fri, Sep 23, 2016 at 8:39 AM, wvinton@stjlabs.com <instructure@jiveon.com

Agreed! When a student sees a grade of 89.7 or even 89.4, they are compelled to bargain to get it up to a 90. Now, I do not want to negate any option to show that percentile or score but the option to hide it in favor of showing just a letter grade (or just a point value) would be a great enhancement. So anyone who wants all calculations to be shown should be allowed to have that as well as have the option to choose what value is displayed for any given entered or calculated grade.

I would like to see this option as well.
