Using Google Docs in Canvas with iPads

We are NOT a google apps school.  We use Canvas for our LMS.

I have created a google doc in my own Google Drive for all students to add a question.

I want my students to use iPads to open it in their Canvas app and edit it.

In my trial runs, I can add to the google doc in Canvas on my MacBook.

I can NOT add to the google doc on my iPad.

I have clicked on the pencil in the corner.  It just asks me to get the app.  If I get the app, I am required to log in (my students will not have google accounts).

If I click on the up sharing arrow - it says open in Safari.  That reopens the document, but iPads still can not type in the boxes.

How can I use Google docs in my Canvas account on an iPad?

thanks, Jenny
