How do I create and assign a voice thread to student groups? Hope this question isn't redundant, but my search turned up nothing.
Ashley, VoiceThread is a third party application that integrates into Canvas, so not an actual built in part of Canvas. In addition, this is the global Canvas Community (all Canvas users) so many of us don't have access to this product.
I did a quick search at your University and came across the following document - VoiceThread Instructions | Rutgers University - Center for Online & Hybrid Learning and Instructional Technologies. I'm not sure how much it will help, but if you have additional questions you should probably contact someone at your specific Institution for help - Contact Help Desk | Rutgers University - Center for Online & Hybrid Learning and Instructional Technologies
Hope this information helps get you on the right track!!
Thank you, Kona.

Thanks for the video link, George. It was generally helpful, ... but it didn't address the original question. I would like to use VoiceThread in my class this year to have students discuss and comment on papers. However, I don't want the entire class crowded in on a single instance of the paper. I tried that once before, and it was just messy and unproductive. So I was hoping to run it as a group assignment, using their existing lab groups to divide them out into smaller discussion teams. However, it seems that Canvas turns off the VoiceThread extension if "group" is selected. So, if I'm going to use VoiceThread, I'll need some kind of work-around. Do you have any ideas?
You can make a "Create a VoiceThread" link in Canvas and have your students upload their papers to their own VoiceThread and share it with you and the rest of the class. Then, they can go into your VT group and record their feedback on their peers' work. Here is a tutorial showing how to work in a VT group: How To: Working In A VoiceThread Group - YouTube and here is our help documentation which will show how to make a "Create a VoiceThread" activity through the assignment builder: Canvas – VoiceThread

I actually ended up doing something similar, but with Google Docs instead of VoiceThread. I was playing around with the idea of setting up 5 separate instances of the paper in VoiceThread, and giving each group their own unique link, but when I went to insert some kick-off comments in the VoiceThread, I realized that the text comments couldn't be linked to specific parts of the document (lines of text, images) the way voice and video comments could. That kind of killed it for me, at least for this specific assignment. All the text comments would end up just floating around with no way to see what they were referring to!
It's a decent work-around, though, and maybe I'll come back to VT for a future assignment of a different nature.
