Can pages and other files in Canvas be locked to prevent students from printing them? Is there a way to check to see who has printed documents?
Kym, as far as I'm aware there isn't a way to prevent students from printing any content in Canvas or checking to see who has printed things from Canvas.
Kym Blanchard, have you learned a way to circumvent this problem?
Just practically speaking, any content that is displayed on a screen can be screen-captured and printed. You can make it more tedious, time-consuming, wasteful of paper etc. etc. if the printing happens via screen captures, but there would be no way to prevent it from happening.
Which is why I have to ask: if the content is part of a course, why would you not want students to print it? If there is some reason why they should not print it, probably the best thing to do is to explain to them the reasons why, rather than trying to impose a technology barrier. Maybe there is some other way to meet the students' needs so that they won't feel a need to print?
Since I am not sure what it is that you don't want them to print and why, I can't really guess what the alternatives might be. But there are usually good alternatives to any dilemma. :-)
I was interested in learning more about this topic because of specific limitations on the printing permissions of a particular product. In the end, after receiving printing permissions from the publisher, I had the bookstore print the material and sell it in the book store.
