How do I email all students in my class?
Hello David Osterberg...
The Canvas Guide for messaging your entire class can be found here: How do I send a message to all course users in Conversations?
This also brings up a related topic...e-mail. Canvas messaging is not e-mail...it is messaging. What I mean is that all users in Canvas can set up how they want to be notified and the frequency of those notifications. So, it is entirely possible for students to set up their profile where they could potentially turn off all e-mail notifications and only be notified about events in their courses via text message, for example. Or, if they do want to be notified about Canvas events, they may only choose to receive those notifications daily or weekly, for example. So, if you want to ensure that your students are indeed receiving an e-mail from you, I would recommend sending the e-mail message from your school's e-mail client (Outlook, for example)...which may require that you have a listing of your student's e-mail address. Here are a couple Canvas Guides on profile settings and notification preferences for you:
How do I add contact methods to receive Canvas notifications?
How do I add an additional email address as a contact method in Canvas?
How do I add a text (SMS) contact method in Canvas?
How do I set my Canvas notification preferences?
I hope this helps, David!
Can the instructor know if enrolled students in an unpublished course have set any preferences to receive messages or email? If messages is not email, then what is the correct terminology and method for sending a message to all student users?
Hi Larry Buland...
Since notification preferences are set at a user account level, it's not really possible to know what your students may or may not choose for their notifications. They may choose to receive notifications via e-mail one day but then decide that's not ideal for them, so they change the notification preferences the next day.
For your second question, the button on the left side global navigation is called the "Inbox", but it is also referred to as "Conversations". See this set of Canvas Guides for more information: https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-4131#jive_content_id_Conversations To ensure that you are contacting your students by e-mail, you may need to send them an e-mail through your school's e-mail client...such as Outlook. That's what we recommend to our faculty. They can grab student e-mail addresses from their class list in our SIS, and then they paste those addresses into an e-mail message in Outlook.
Hope this helps, Larry!
Larry, please be aware that it is not possible to send messages to students from an unpublished course, regardless of what their notification preferences are. The course needs to be published before the messages can be sent.
