I just purchased an ebook through cengage.. how do I link it to canvas?
In that case, Leslie, I wonder if your instructor has built the course in Canvas around a Cengage Course Cartridge. Generally when that's the case, if you're going to be required to use Cengage resources associated with the textbook to complete assignments, you might have (and probably should have) been provided with an access code along with your purchase--and your teacher should then have the instructions for you on how to activate that code in your course.
I checked the Cengage site for more information, and their documentation reads, "If your school is using our product on a Learning Management System such as ...Canvas, please follow the login instructions provided by your instructor in your course syllabus." So I suggest you click on the Help link in the left (global) navigation of your course and select the Ask Your Instructor a Question option to get specific guidance from your instructor on how to associate your new ebook with Canvas.
Contact your representative from Cengage, request the Key and Shared Secret and LTI install instructions. Pass that information to your school's Canvas Admin. Once the admin completes the LTI install, contact Cengage again and ask for your course to be linked to the appropriate material.
Then edit your course's navigation to enable the Cengage link in your course navigation, in order for you and your class to access the content.
I don't know if that's the workflow Cengage likes, but it's what gets the job done for our school.
Small Edit, because I often think of everything Canvas related from the perspective of the admin, not the faculty - You can technically install the LTI yourself into your own course. However, your admin may have already started that process, and/or may need to get all LTI installs approved, or track them, so at least talking to them is nice from an admin point of view.
Anthony, it sounds like Leslie Navarro is a student. Leslie, is that correct?
Yes I am a new student
