I'd like to send all the students in my class an email or direct communication. How do I accomplish this? Thanks for your answer.
You would send class emails through your Inbox (or Conversations), which is the Canvas email client. You can access that by clicking the Inbox icon on the far left navigation, or go to https://[your institution].instructure.com/conversation.
Click on the new message icon.
The choose a course and select the address book icon.
Choose the all students option and type out your message.

I don't understand "Send an individual message to each recipient." Doesn't a message to "all students" do this automatically?
Thomas, sending a message to "all students" sends a message to all students as a group*. A student who replies is sending that reply to all of the recipients. By enabling the "Send an individual message to each recipient" box, replies will only be sent to the original sender rather than to the entire group. This is detailed in How do I send a message to all course users in Conversations?
*As the guide explains, if there are over 100 students in the course, individual messages will be sent automatically
