Students need to read a short story before taking the quiz. How do I add a PDF file for the reading?
Hi Michelle- There's a few ways you can do this; I've seen both. But to get basically the good news out of the way, this is easily done for almost any type of quiz question courtesy of the fact that Canvas has the rich content editor for the questions. So you can insert a new attachment or link to any existing course file the same way you do anywhere else in Canvas courtesy of the rich content editor, as outlined here: How do I insert course files into the Rich Content Editor using the Content Selector? as well as here: How do I link course content to a quiz question?
As to HOW, I have seen some faculty first present the PDF "ahead of the questions," as it were, by creating a Text (No Question) type of "question" first and including the PDF there. The students could then answer the questions following using the PDF. One caveat with this method: they would have to click the link to DOWNLOAD the PDF to their desktops (or wherever....) so that they could open it and have it accessible while answering the questions afterwards--assuming that's part of your intent.
The other method is to insert the PDF along with the question itself. We do that here for some of the placement tests, where students have to write an essay in response to the question that is posed along with the PDF. This way, even if they do not download it but instead use the box file previewer, it is readily available to them while answering the question.
Two important things. As you should always do, PREVIEW the quiz to see if there are things that should be explained as part of the question regarding downloading/accessing the PDF. Never assume students will automatically know that a PDF will download to their downloads folder (for most browsers). You did not state whether this would be done in a lab environment or on their own at home, but instructions help!
Secondly, and perhaps MOST importantly, assuming you do not want students to access the reading file PDF ahead of time (and I am guessing you do not), be sure to UNPUBLISH the PDF from your Files menu item in Canvas. The default setting when doing that is to make the file available only when a link to the file is provided, as would be the case here. More details here: How do I restrict files and folders to students in Canvas? Alternatively, simply hide the Files menu area altogether, as covered here: How do I reorder and hide Course Navigation links?
Hope this helps a bit.
