So, I've got a gradebook with four assignment groups

Assignments 50%

Tests 25%

HW 15%

Final 10%

Within three of the groups I have a student that has submitted a few of each item, and has a running total for each assignment group that is the points earned so far divided by the points possible so far. The final is a single assignment, and has not been submitted.

What I can't figure out, however, is how the Assignments groups are being weighted to compute the Total grade.

While having the option "Treat missing as 0" unchecked, what is the algorithm used to compute the Total from the Weighted Assignment Groups when one of the Assignment Groups has no submissions? Specifically, what is Canvas doing about the Final column while there are no submissions for the Final Assignment group?

Here's an example gradebook student

Thanks, Glen

Glen,

It's a straight mathematical weighted average (like a GPA) but categories with no grades in them are ignored.

Weighted average = (sum of scores * weights) / (sum of weights)

(86.11*0.50 + 90.00*0.25 + 80.00*.15) / (0.50 + 0.25 + 0.15) = 77.555 / 0.90 = 86.172222222
