Why can't I send emails to course designers from canvas?
Cecily and Kona,
I was assigned to research a documentation update based on this question. As I was performing my own research in Conversations, I found that I could not see a user with a Designer role (or a custom role with Designer as the base role) in the Address Book but I could type their name in manually, which allowed me to send a message to them. (I tested this as a Teacher.) They also received the message if the teacher messaged all users in the course. Before I make any documentation updates, I'm curious if either of you can type in the name of a Designer as a workaround to message them. Please let me know. Thanks!
What is your role (teacher?) and are you in a course with them?
I am the instructor as well as the course coordinator. The people I have called 'course designer' are really TAs who I want to have access to course material and email but not grades. (If I call them TAs they will have access to grades.)

I verified this myself (that you can't message Course Designers) and then did some asking around (Instructure employees) to confirm that no, you can't message course designers. As to the why, I have no idea. My recommendation for this is to contact the Canvas Admin at your school and see if they can talk with your Canvas CSM about it.
Hope this helps!
Thanks. Someone else told me the same thing. I contacted my admin and he sent it right back to the Canvas court. I bounced it back to him. So far no response.
sounds like a solution you need is to create a custom role - one based on TA, but no access to grades. That would allow the user to be added to the course, not see grades, but show in the TA list for sending messages.
This is something your school's Admin should be able to create.
I just tried this and was able to start typing the name of the TA into the To box and have it show up.
I tested this out using 2 non-admin, non-teacher accounts, with the same results. The account set as a student didn't see designer in the dropdown, but once I typed in a valid string the designer's name populated.
Yes that did work. So it is somewhat helpful. But, I have 7 'designers' and it would be easier to send messages to all of them along with the students rather than to have to enter each of their names separately.
Thanks, Kona and Anthony!
