Can students see a rubric before submitting for an assignment? How can students see rubric comments?
Hi Carrie Degroff...
Can students see a rubric before submitting for an assignment?
Yes...if you create an assignment with a rubric for grading, the student will see the rubric below the directions for your assignment. To test this yourself, create an assignment with some directions. Then, create a rubric under it. After the rubric is saved, go into your course "Settings" screen, and then go to "Student View". Then, view the assignment from a student's perspective to see what it looks like. Leave "Student View" when you are done.

How can students see rubric comments?
After you have graded an assignment, your students will be able to view any comments from you. Here is a student Canvas Guide that shows what a student would see: How do I view my grades in a current course? There is also a good video that explains this: Grades (Students)
I hope this information is helpful to you, Carrie!
I make an effort to make sure my students are aware of the rubrics. They eliminate perceptions of subjectivity in assessing the deliverables and they guide students to complete the learning outcomes. I also have to field fewer assignment detail questions when I have good rubrics and the students are aware of them.
