I need to add grades after the end of a grading period. How can I do this?
Kevin, welcome to the Canvas Community! After a grading period closes, by design, grades for that grading period can no longer be edited. Please refer to Canvas Release: Close Dates for Grading Periods for a detailed description of the grade change limitations that are placed on grading periods, specifically:
You can only edit grades for assignments in a current or future grading period. Once the close date for a grading period has passed, you cannot edit grades for the prior grading period.
In addition, this document--How do I view grading periods in a course?--differentiates between close and end dates:
You can only edit grades in a current or future grading period. Once the close date for a grading period has passed, you cannot edit grades for the prior grading period. The close date may be the same date as the end date, or may extend past the end date.
In other words, grading periods allow for a time span after the end date, but before the close date, when grade edits are still allowed; however, once the close date passes, grades for a prior grading period can no longer be edited.
Grading periods and their associated dates are created by your school's admins, so you will need to contact them to see if they are able to override the close date of the grading period in this case. Good luck!
Sometimes, for various reasons, you have to give a student a grade of incomplete and accept work after the close date. This seems like an unnecessary restriction.
