How do you deal with a transfer student's previous grade?

There is a student who transferred into a class in mid-November. The teacher has been having the student keep up with the current course workload as well as studying for the final, but given the short amount of time the student had to catch up in the course, it will not be possible to complete everything the student has missed. The teacher would like to use the course grade from the student's previous school as the basis for the current grade, and then add on to it the assignments completed while in the teacher's class (which he is currently taking).

As an example: Is there a way to set the student's grade as an A- and then have all of his subsequent grades with the current course calculated appropriately as part of the student's base grade?
