I am trying to determine whether or not my students have downloaded an assignment I have set up. Is there any way to check which students have done this? Thanks!
Thanks for the shout out, but when I use the Access Report Data report, I do get the number of times a student has viewed a file. That is unless I'm really missing something.
I found this one useful since I have two versions of "The Table.pdf" and I should consolidate those into one file.
Anyway, to get access to the information, you filter on Category = files and make your values the Sum of Views.
If you put Title in the column and Display Name or Sortable Name in the row, you'll get a pivot table with the counts for each student.
If you add Title as a filter and the student's name in the row, then you can get the counts for particular files for each student. Here's what my "the_table.pdf" breaks down as:
Students that aren't listed didn't download it.
This only works for files that are hosted within Canvas (including files inside a quiz or group project files, so the list could be long). If a download is linked from a content page or a quiz, then it won't show up this way -- but if it's in the modules page, then it would show up as external_urls.
Hi Andrew Frando - That sounds something along the lines of a few Feature Ideas in the past, most notably this one, which is flagged as being on the "Product Radar," though one which does not seem to have a time for implementation: view access by file or item, not user . You are certainly not alone in wanting something like this, though!
By the way, I'll just toss in a reference to James Jones' outstanding documentation on extracting student data all in one place with his excellent document here: Obtaining and using Access Report data for an entire course . (Alas, this does not include the number of times something was downloaded, though.)
Wow--I obviously stand corrected! Thank you James Jones! It's been awhile since I've run it for a faculty member since I'm no longer teaching myself. That is very good to know.
