/courses/4 different course
It means that the Link Validator found a problem with one of the links in your course because it is linking to a course with a different Course ID number. Generally speaking, you don't want to have links sending students to other courses in your school's Canvas instance. The reason for this is because not all students in one course will have access or be enrolled in the other course. So, if students who are in course "A" try and click on a link to content in course "B", they'll get an error message because they are not enrolled in the course. Here is a Canvas Guide I found that describes most of the error messages, but I didn't see anything on a different course. How do I validate links in a course? Might be a good idea to post that suggestion to the Guide. :-)
That makes sense, but when I click on the link the url has the same course number as all my other pages. I'm confused.
Hey Cindy Tolman, let's take a look at an example from my sandbox course:
The red arrow indicates the location of the potentially problematic link. In this case that would be something within my sandbox course. However, somewhere on that piece of content is a link to something in a different course (the yellow box). These links can sometimes be difficult to find even when you know where they are in the course. Using the HTML editor can be useful in tracking them down. How do I use the HTML view in the Rich Content Editor? I've also had some success with a Chrome extension called Check My Links.
Thanks, Adam. This is very helpful. There is a link in that page that goes to a "How to Use Canvas" course, which is a different course, but all students have access to it. It was just unclear to me (until your response) that that was the link causing the message. It was not at all clear from the link validation page.
