I was leaving a comment then used backspace to erase what I was writing and somehow the student's post was deleted. Does anyone know how to get it back?
Hello George Vogler, and welcome to the Canvas Community! First, for many things other than discussions (alas) the universal way to retrieve deleted items in Canvas is to add the word undelete after your course number within whatever your Canvas address is. For example, if you head to the main landing page for your course site, it may be something like: http://stateu.instructure.com/courses/12345 and then you type in /undelete. So (same example) http://stateu.instructure.com/courses/12345/undelete . The result will be a screen of items that you can restore.
As I mentioned, however, Discussions will likely not be among the things you see on the resulting screen. So, if not, I would follow Kona Jones excellent advice that she gives here: how to undelete / restore comments on Discussion? and try accessing your institution's Test or Beta servers. Both of these servers were "refreshed" this past weekend with the new release, so you may be able to find it there, but you would have to re-post the student's post yourself with a bit of an explanatory note!
(By the way, another general rule of thumb--if you catch it right away depending on circumstances--is doing a Ctrl-Z on a Windows machine...which I imagine is Cmd-Z on a Mac. That does not always work, however, but it does sometimes! I've even had it work when accidentally backspacing over something in my own replies in this Community forum.)
Hope this helps a bit.
Hi George Vogler...
In addition to the great help from Ken Black... when I first read your posting earlier today, I was wondering if you had pressed your "Backspace" button on your keyboard one too many times? The "Backspace" key can also act as the "Back" button in your web browser, so if you had gone back a page, my guess is the content may have gotten lost that way. I've had similar things happen where I've written or pasted text into a page, and I accidentally hit the "Backspace" button, and I lost it all. Had to redo the page. :-(
