how do I extend due dates for individuals, not the entire class?
Hello, Marlea, and welcome to the Canvas Community! To extend a due date for a specific student, use the differentiated assignments feature. You'll find more about how to use that (for an individual student, an entire section, or a course group) here:
How do I assign an assignment to an individual student?
How do I assign a quiz to an individual student?
Trevor CrandallMelinda Evans Faculty, particularly those in NYC, will love this! They were really disappointed that you couldn't change due dates for one person. It certainly requires work, but I think they will like it. It will also mean the updated date is tracked for the student!
Stephanie - A quick question. Do you know if the functionality for modifying the date works AFTER the due date has passed? Our policy is for students to request an extension ahead of time, but there are always exceptions. I just want to get ahead of the question.
The scenario... 1. student gets the same due date as the rest of the class, 2. student misses deadline, 3. student requests extension, 4. faculty grants it and updates the due date. Will the faculty member be able to modify it then or is it locked because the date has passed?
Yes, Stephanie, this functionality allows the teacher to override the due date for a single student even if the due date has passed; indeed, that's an ideal use case. If the teacher uses the differentiated assignment capability, the assignment will be unlocked, but only for that single student.
Heh just realized this a Stephanie - Stefanie conversation.
Well allow me to interject, Stephanie Nelson and also offer that with quizzes instructors can moderate the quiz and extend a due date for an individual student as well.
Once I publish my quiz, how do I use the Moderate Quiz page?
Cheers - Shar
"Stephanie to Stefanie"--heh.
Stephanie, Moderate Quiz is a super-nifty feature (it's great for extending time for a single student or a group of students, too), and the one thing I'd add to Sharmaine's helpful advice is that when you use the Moderate Quiz functionality to unlock a quiz for a single student, you won't be able to add a new due date; enabling that essentially unlocks the quiz in perpetuity for that student.
