Hi there,

I am working on a course that has 5 quizzes, each worth 20 % of the grade, built like this:

The exams are cumulative so:

- Exam 1 has questions on sessions 1-3. 25 questions worth 1 point each. 25 points total
- Exam 2 has questions on sessions 1-6, 30 questions worth 1 point each. 30 points total
- Exam 3 has questions on sessions 1-9, 35 questions worth 1 point each. 35 points total....and so on.

I have two issues:

- I can't quite wrap my head around how the number of questions/points for each exam effects the weighting. Or, does it not at all because the weighting is already set at 20% for each exam.
- The instructor is considering dropping the lowest exam score. Would this have any impact on the answer to the first issue?

You're welcome, Margaret, and thanks for letting us know!

I've been thinking about what the instructor was trying to accomplish, and you've confirmed what I thought, namely that Canvas isn't innately designed to do what he has already promised he will do. But, going forward, what the instructor might consider (for future semesters--it's too late to do it now) is to reconfigure the quizzes so that each one is worth the same number of points. He can only do this by manipulating the point values for the questions within the quizzes, but it's not hard to accomplish if he is willing to make each quiz question worth the same number of points: he can drag and drop all of the questions into a single question group, and assign a point value such that the total is, let's say, 100, to make it easy. That will be easy for the 25-point quiz, but not so easy for the other ones; he'll have to change the number of questions to an even divisor of 100--or he will have to use multiple question groups, with some questions having slightly higher point values than others. (By the way, that's what I do; I assess my quiz questions and give higher point values to ones that I think require higher level reasoning, and as a happy byproduct, this helps me get to that magical 100-point total.)

He can then put all five now-equal-in-point-value quizzes into a single assignment group worth 100% of the grade, and set a grading rule on the group to drop the lowest score--and he can either do that at the very beginning of the semester, or wait until closer to the end of the semester to set the rule. That will accomplish the grading scheme he's after programmatically, without the need for downloading and re-uploading the Gradebook.

What are your thoughts?
