Why are my files being deleted? As Canvas automatically deletes an image file, that image disappears from the course.
Patricia, I've been using Canvas since 2012 (admin and teacher) and I can't think of anything built in or otherwise that would be deleting your files. What specifically are you doing and have you checked your course Files (link on left) to see if your files are there? The more information we have the better we'll be able to help you!
Hi Kona. Thanks for responding. To answer your questions, I was adding new content when a pop up window appeared and said 'image XYZ has been deleted'. I did check the Files link and the image was no longer there. Initially I thought I accidentally hit something, but then it happened again. I have since gone into my Settings and substantially increased my file storage. That seems to have corrected the issue, but it also seems like an odd fix. If I can just go in and modify that setting from 500 MB to 10 GB - why even have it at all? I just don't want to find out the hard way that there is some kind of cap on my file storage size. May I ask, what is your's set at? Did you adjust this setting yourself or is there a particular default size used?
Interesting, I've never seen or heard of that pop-up message. Are you an Instructor or Admin? We have our courses set to 500MB and Instructors aren't allowed to increase that on their own, only an admin can do it. We also try to never up that 500MB course limit so we don't have to worry about using up too much space. My experience has been that when people went over their personal or course storage limit then things just quit uploading until the person went in and deleted some stuff.
I thought that it might be resetting the quota from large -600 MB to smaller -500MB. After testing that, I could not reproduce any error message and my preliminary findings is that the change leaves all files intact above 500 MB but prevents additional files from being added.
So I could not produce the error message, and I have not seen that message.
The only time I have ever heard of a file being deleted is if a copyright violation is found. Canvas will delete any file if you accidentally posted copyright materials without permission
Thanks everyone, but I'm not sure what is going on in my case. To address some of the suggestions:
1) The pop up message would appear after I uploaded a new image. As if it was deleting one to make room for another. I have been able to upload new content the entire time - even before I increased my file storage size.
2) The two images in question were uploaded nearly 6 months prior to the automatic deletion. I don't believe it was a copyright issue because they were both images I had saved from powerpoint. They were pictures of my school that I added a fancy boarder to in powerpoint and then saved as a jpeg.
Nothing has been deleted since, but I did increase the storage setting.
Aside from slow downloads/uploads what other ramifications may occur if the course is too large of a file?
Hi Patricia Roth...
It's been over a month without any new activity in this particular discussion thread, so I thought that I would check in with you. Are you still having issues with files being auto-deleted? As Kona suggested earlier, this seems like an odd behavior that I've also never seen in Canvas. Do you have any outstanding questions regarding this issue? If so, please go ahead and post those below. But, if you feel that one of the above comments is "Correct", please go ahead and mark it as such. Because there hasn't been any new activity in this discussion for over a month, I'm going to mark your question as "Assumed Answered", but that won't prevent you or others from posting additional replies below. I hope that's okay with you. Looking forward to hearing from you soon, Patricia.
