I would like to embed an external URL in the course navigation for all courses in a single account. Has anyone had success or recommendations?
Hi Jill M. Lanza...
I think the easiest way to do this would be to use the LTI Redirect Tool. If you are an admin for your school's Canvas instance, you could add this at the account level. When adding it, you'll see something like this:
So, you can name the button whatever you want (in the "Name" field), and then you can choose where (or where not) it should show up in a course, account, or user's navigation. I hope this helps, Jill.
Using the redirect tool, will open the URL in Canvas, and the Redirect tool can be used in a single course if you don't want the URL available in all courses. I use this trick both ways: We have made resources available to students across the campus by adding the navigati8on item (such as our Library Resources page) to all courses, and I have added navigation to a single course (such as an online medical dictionary).
Hello Jill M. Lanza...
I noticed that it has been quite a while since you first posted this question here in the Canvas Community and received responses from both me and Kelley L. Meeusen. Have you had an opportunity to review our responses since you first posted this question? If so, did either of them help to answer your question? Or, are you still looking for some help with your initial question? If you feel that one of our responses did help to answer your question, please go ahead and mark it as "Correct". However, if you are still looking for help, please let us know by posting a message below so that members of the Canvas Community can continue to help you.
As I was reading through Kelley's response, another option occurred to me which may work for your needs? Have you considered adding the custom link to your "Help" menu in the left navigation menu? You'd need admin rights to do this (so if you're not an admin, speak with someone who is at your school). You can use this Guide to help: How do I customize the Canvas Help Menu for an account? You can target the custom link to only show for students or only teachers...or both...for example. Would this be another option for you to consider?
Since we've not heard from you since May 26th, I'm going to mark your question as "Assumed Answered", but that won't prevent you or others from posting additional questions/comments related to your initial question below. I hope this is okay with you, Jill. Looking forward to hearing from you soon!
