Yes, that helps a lot! The Assignment Index page that you are referring to is for setting up your gradebook , it's not really a place to organize or display content to your students. Example: the assignment groups are a way to organize your assignments in your gradebook (Grades) or you can even weight them if you have a percentage based gradebook.
My recommendation is to hide this Assignment Index page completely from student view (go to course settings and click on the navigation tab; you can then select which links/pages on the left are visible to students - we recommend hiding most of these from students - the less there the less confused they get).
My next recommendation is to organize your assignments in Modules. This is the place in Canvas where people normally build their courses and you can organize content (assignments, discussions, quizzes, files, pages, links, etc) there and hide/unhide it (publish/unpublish it) by content item or by an entire Module. Here are the guides related to Modules that will help you with this - Modules

Barry, welcome to Canvas and the Community! To make sure I'm providing the best help I can, could you explain a little more about what you mean by "assignment folder?" I only ask because the only place Canvas allows folders is in the File Index area so I want to make sure I know what you are talking about.
Regardless, anything that's not published (so gray cloud, not green with a check mark) will not be visible to students. You can check this by using the Test student (go to course settings and then upper right button is your Test Student).
If I can get a little more information about exactly where you are working in Canvas and then what you're trying to do I'm sure we can help!
Hi, thanks for writing. I will take a class on this for sure. I am transitioning from Blackboard, which I know very well. So, learning curve, but not afraid of LMS.
When you view the left menu panel in a specific course, you can click on the “assignment” link. From there, you can create folders (groups) to house specific assignments.
I am looking for a way to hide that area from students – i.e., when they “click on their assignment link and see the folders (groups) I created, they won’t “see” this folder. I do not want to individually block the content by drilling down.
I hope this explains it. I may be using the work folder in the wrong way.
Um, yep. Totally. When I noticed I could not even attach a prompt, I knew something was off.
Thank you VERY MUCH!
Appreciate the prompt replies, etc., etc.
Excellent! Glad I could help! Happy Canvas'ing
