Has anyone use canvas as a first day required orientation for their on line class? if you did, was it helpful for the students? What type of orientation did you do, audio or video?
Mona, we have a full student orientation course in Canvas that students must complete before they can access their regular courses. We've been doing this since 2009 and it's been working well for us. For more information see the following - Canvas Instructor Training and Student Orientation
As an Instructor I also have a Getting Started module with all the important info about my course (Syllabus, grading, late work, assignment info, etc) and then a quiz that students must take and pass with a 100% before they can get into the regular week 1 content.
We have an Online Student Orientation Course in Canvas (Canvas and a whole lot more) we have been using for five years. While not required it has still lowered our start-of-term support calls significantly. Might even say, "Dramatically!" We added it as a Course navigation link campus wide, and set it as open enrollment.
We also created a Canvas Student orientation Module that we made available in two forms (with and without quiz) for our faculty to include in their courses if they wish.
Both of these puppies are in Canvas Commons, under Courses. You can search by my name to find them.
