Groups, Scheduler, or something better?

I'm giving my class an assignment "Between Sept 28th and Nov 24th you need to observe two TV newscasts. (A) news side B) production side.) There's only enough room for two people in each room per a show for a total of four people per a show. You must sign up for the shows you intend to observe." (This is to prevent 25 people from trying to show up on the last day.)

The choices are 11am, 4pm, and 5pm between Sept 28th and Nov 24th. They need to pick 2 shows. It can be different shows on the same day, or the same show's time slot on different days. Right now I've got a spreadsheet calendar next to the studio for them to sign up on. There's roughly 44 class days (with three shows a day) for them to choose from. It seems like there would be a ton of groups or a ton of scheduled days. Either way it seems like it would clutter the calendar up with so many signups.

Is there a better way?

Thanks, Jeff
