How do I add a column to my grade book in canvas?
Hi Janet
If you do not want the column to be an assignment column, you can also enable the "Notes Column" in the gradebook.
If you are interested in the ability to add columns for various free-style uses, you might want to participate in Priority: Gradebook Enhancements where some great changes are being worked on for gradebooks in two phases. And even better news, Phase I is due soon!
I hope this helps,
Kelley
I think it depends on the purpose of the column. If you want a place for entering a grade for an assignment or other class activity then adding an assignment is the way to go. If you'd like to enter in notes (that the student wouldn't see) then enabling the notes column is the best step.
Actually, what I want is a column that keeps track of graded assignments and will give a weighted total as the semester progresses so by midterm the students can see what their midterm grade is. This was easy to do in Blackboard. Is this possible in Canvas? Thanks.

Hi, Janet James! Canvas automatically keeps a running total of the student's grade. There is no need to do add a column for this. By default, the total column is the last column in the grade book, but you can move it right next to student names. Here is a tutorial: How do I move the Total column in the Gradebook?.
Does that help?
By the way, my college did away with midterm grades precisely because students can always see their current grade for the course in Canvas.
Janet James Welcome to Canvas and the Canvas Community! You've gotten some great suggestions here. As the conversation has developed, I see that you're looking for a way to calculate grades according to weightings. Canvas makes that easy to do, and you'll find instructions for setting up your Gradebook in that manner in How do I weight the final course grade based on assignment groups? As Dallas notes, once you've done this, students will always be able to see their cumulative current grade in the course.
The easiest thing to do is to create a new assignment and let it auto populate into the grade book for you.
