Any suggestions? Or is that just the way the program works?
Hi Annette ~
I'm glad that you found the Canvas Community! It's a great place to find answers and to connect with other Canvas users, no matter which role they have!
As a parent observer, you have access to a lot of great information. I do recognize that there are some challenges, however, in making resources easy to navigate.
From the dashboard, you have a couple of options. Since both of your students' courses are looped together, I encourage you to adjust the nickname for each course. That way, you can include each child's first initial or name ahead of the course name (ie: K US History). Another option is to color code the course cards so all of child #1's courses is one color and all of child #2's courses are another.
If you have time, it would be awesome if you could add your insights and your family's perspective to these two ideas which are open for voting in the Canvas Community:
Parents: toggle view between children
Include Student Name in Observer Notifications
There is another option for you as well. With the Canvas Parent App, you are able to follow both of your students and keep their courses separate. You can even create customized notifications on a student-by-student basis. The app is free in the Apple Store and on Google Play. While the app doesn't have all of the features as web, it's awesome for keeping track of progress, upcoming assignments, and initiating conversations at home. ...you'll have to check with your institution to make sure this is enabled, however.
Feel free to reply if you have any other questions! I'd be happy to help you navigate the observer role so it works well for you and your family!
I downloaded that and my children's school is not coming up as an option to choose after signing in.
If your children's school is not automatically populating, there's a good possibility that Canvas Parent hasn't been enabled for your district/institution. Please reach out to your district's technology department for more information; they'll be able to explain their rationale for enabling or disabling the feature for their families.
Thank you, Kristin, for your help. I was able to figure out something that works for me.
So sorry!!! I didn’t realize this was on the website. I thought this was a personal e-mail, not updates to the website :/ Aye, aye, aye. I was referring to other e-mails I received from Canvas when I spoke of the updates
Have a great day =)
Hello Annette Robinson...
I noticed that we have not heard from you since you first posted this question here in the Canvas Community on August 21st. So, I wanted to check in with you. Have you had an opportunity to review the feedback that you've received from Kristin Lundstrum? If so, did it help to answer your question? Or, are you still looking for some assistance with this question? If you feel that one of Kristin's replies has helped to answer your question, please go ahead and mark it as "Correct". However, if you are still looking for some help, please come back to this discussion topic to provide an update below. For now, since we've not heard from you and since there hasn't been any new activity in this thread for almost two months, I'm going to mark your question as "Assumed Answered". However, that won't prevent you or others from posting additional questions/comments related to this topic below. I hope that's okay with you, Annette. Looking forward to hearing back from you soon!
I actually did not post that question. I posted a different comment though. My name is Dacia Ringenberg. Mine had to do with all my kids stuff being mixed together, and I was able to solve that through parent canvas. I still have to check the regular Canvas though, and it is absolutely infuriating that I can only have 10 boxes marked on the calendar, when I need 22 boxes marked.
I finally was able to spend some time looking at this and I've got it.
Thank you for following up!
You’re kidding right? Being funny?
Canvas does not distinguish the classes for each child, so there’s nothing to figure out, it’s not an option. Chris is not supposed to be able to have that option, unless he downloads parent canvas on his mobile device.
I replied back to your email asking for an update letting you know that I was not Chris, and that was not my question. Not sure where the misunderstanding came from, but this follow-up email is just hilarious to me.
I'm not sure what your reply is about. This was my question that I asked of canvas and they responded. I'm also unsure what the issue is with me responding to Chris (who, I'm gathering, works for Canvas) as that is who I got the response from. I found a solution that works for me.
Have a nice day!
Hi there, Annette Robinson...
I am glad that you were able to find a solution that works for you. Is that solution something that someone has already suggested here in this thread (one that you could mark as "Correct")? Or, was it something different that you would be willing to share with us in this thread?
Side note: I'm not employed by Canvas. However, I am a Canvas Coach, so I do get a few extra perks here in the Community. I work at a Technical College in Wisconsin. :-)
Thanks for your reply. Kristin's suggestion of adding one child's name to the beginning of the course as well as color coding helped. We had a different program for two of my kid's schools the previous years so this is just taking getting used to. Change is good, right?
Thanks again for following up.
You bet, Annette Robinson...
I've gone ahead and marked Kristin Lundstrum's response as "Correct". Thanks.
And by the way, I did not receive any response from you asking for an update. The only responses from you are the following:
Neither asking for an update.
Hi Dacia Ringenberg...
It sounds like you're replying via e-mail rather than signing back in to the Canvas Community website to respond. I've seen that happen with other users where they will reply back addressing someone else who hasn't even posted in the topic. It's a bit strange when I see those, but as best I can tell, it seems like that's occurring because those people have viewed the topic (via the gray "Global Outreach" box underneath the original poster's question). I'm not completely sure on this theory...but that's what I'm going with. Ha!
When I first joined the Community, I also had all Community notifications going to my e-mail account, but then it got to be too much. So I turned them off and only check my notifications here on the web (this allows me to keep my Community inbox separate from my work e-mail inbox).
Hope this helps, Dacia!
