Issue: When students, who have not been assigned to a group yet for some reason (eg. late enrolled students), join a group discussion space, there is no alert which informs this. The statement is misleading (see the screenshot below). Those students will think that they are in a group discussion space. If they post, their posting will be displayed to the main discussion space. Later on, when an instructor put those students into groups, students won't be able to access their postings in the main discussion space any more and the instructor won't be able to see those postings through the SpeedGrader. This will confuse the instructor and the students.
Below is the screenshot of group discussion space. This student was not assigned to any group but he/she can still access the group discussion space. If this student post something, it will be displayed to the main discussion space. Currently, there is no solution for this. The best practice is to form groups after a dropout/withdrawal date.
For Canvas Developer:
- Please alert students when students, who have not been assigned to any group yet, join a group discussion. For example, these students should see a statement similar to this: "This is a group discussion. It appears that you have not been assigned to any group yet. Contact your instructor and ask to be added to a group."
- Please disable the Reply button in the main discussion space for group discussions.
