Is there a way to force students to read an announcement before entering a course?
Renee, on the front end of Canvas no. On the back end with some programming possibly, but that’s not my area of expertise.
Yet, depending on what you are trying to accomplish you could use requirements and prerequisites to make it so students have to click on or check as read a page of information (or something else - just not an announcement) in your course before they can move forward in your course or access other course information. I do something like this with all the getting started content in my course - students have to engage with it before they can access the Week 1 course content. For more on this see - How do I add requirements to a module? & How do I add prerequisites to a module?
Side note, I also use this type of thing to help students monitor their progress in the course - Help Students Monitor their Course Progress
Hope this information helps!
Hi Renee Graham
Sorry, there is very little on Earth you can actually force anybody to do, and there is seldom a good reason for doing so. I expect that you meant something More along the lines of "Require". Furthermore, students can only access a course announcement after they have entered the course, and clicked on the Announcements menu item.
Kona Jones has given you a correct answer and an alternative suggestion. I have another.
While you cannot require students to do anything outside the course (except the expected login), you can set requirements that must be accomplished before being able to move forward in the course. As the first page of an opening module, or by itself in an opening module you can create a simple quiz with just one question (more if you want or need) asking students to attest through a T/F question that they have read and understood the posted course announcement.
Typically, I do not use the Announcement feature in Canvas, because students have to actually leave the course to view them - not happening for way too many students. Include your opening announcement as a text page in the first position of the first module, then set module requirements that students must view it - then follow it with a short quiz, because viewing ain't reading!
I hope this helps,
