How can I make the calendar my home page? I post everyday the agenda and links to homework. I would like students to see the calendar as the homepage instead of the syllabus or assignments.... Can this be done?
Steve, since the calendar is global for all courses someone has for Canvas, not just a specific course, it wouldn’t really work. Students wouldn’t just see the stuff for your course they would see the calendar for all of their courses. I’m guessing this is why it’s not possible to make the calendar the home page of the course.
Hi Steve Orth
Fully online instructors have some concerns about the Canvas Calendars, to-Do lists and like, since they offer direct navigation to an assignment, discussion or quiz; thereby, encouraging students to never actually navigate to their courses (other than the direct link to graded content) and missing all of the instructional materials that make it possible for them to succeed in a graded activity.
Another concern in fully online courses is that it is a best practice to welcome students to a course, and provide information on where and how to get started. This would not be possible if the Calendar were the Front Page.
So no, I would never want the Calendar to be my Front Page in a course. However, I think I can recognize the utility of this in a course where Canvas is entirely supplementary to the in-classroom activities.
Whilst agreeing with Kelley L. Meeusen we have found a particular need for such a model which is creating a course where teachers leave their cover work as Events if they are absent from their lesson (for substitute teachers)
Giving all teachers access to such a course means that we don't have to add teachers to lots of courses.. It also allows teachers to leave comments for other teachers on a course that only they access.
We would just want the course to have the calendar and nothing else...
