It's also important to note that Canvas does not have e-mail. Rather, it is referred to as Conversations (messaging/Inbox). The reason I am pointing this out is because every single user in Canvas has the ability to specify how they want to be contacted/notified within Canvas. This could include one's default e-mail address, a secondary e-mail address, text message, Twitter, etc. Once a person has decided on how he/she wants to be notified about certain things (including any messages via the Canvas Inbox), he/she then decides how frequently to receive those notifications. So, it is entirely possible that even though you send a message via the Canvas Inbox to all your students, that some of the students only receive notification of a new message via text message (so they would prefer to log back in to Canvas in order to read your message). I don't know if this helps or not, but I realized that students were not receiving my emails and announcements with the same efficiency. So I now include it in my syllabus that they must set up their notifications, and that announcements must be set to be forwarded to them immediately. Then I explain that they have the option to forward Canvas email to their personal email, that they can also set up text messaging, and that I use announcements for things they need to know immediately and email for things that they need to know, but within a day or so.
It's still not perfect, but only because some students lamely do no actually set up their notifications. But since it's in the syllabus, they cannot use it as an excuse.
