I recorded my presentation under the group conference option. How can I publish this recording to the course conference for final submittal?
I'm the product manager for BigBlueButton. I work at Blindside Networks, the company that started the BigBlueButton project. While I can't speak for Instructure, I can respond to your question.
> I recorded my presentation under the group conference option. How can I publish this recording to the course conference for final submittal?
By default, the recordings in a conference are only available to those people that created the recordings. Part of the access control is who was on the Invite List when you create a conference.
If it's in a Student Group, then only the students in that group can view that conference.
You can (and should) be able to use Canvas Conferences to record and submit presentations -- it's an excellent use case. What we need to add is the ability to share the link to a recording recording with others.
The feature could appear in Canvas Conferences as a '[ Share ]' button next to the recording, for example, that would give you a link that you could share with others (or submit as part of an assignment).
As Eric suggested, recommend making your suggestion as a Feature Request (feel free to copy the above images).
Finally, I think your University is on the Premium Tier hosting for Canvas Conferences, which means the recording links (when you view a recording) are permanent (they don't expire after 14 days). In this case, you could have copied the recording link and submitted it (by e-mail or as included the link in an assignment submission) for the instructors review (no need to re-record).
Still, having an explicit ability to share the recording link would be helpful.
Hello Aaron Spindler Welcome to the Canvas Community. As I understand it, you recorded a conference session (Big Blue Button) via a course group, and now you are wanting to know if that recording can be shared back with the entire course. I'm not sure that's possible from the current Canvas user interface...at least I've never heard of that being done before. However, I am going to tag Fred Dixon in this reply to see if he might have any thoughts on this for you. Good luck!
Hi Aaron. I would agree with Chris, but hopefully Fred has some thoughts on how this could be done. I did find a previous post discussing this issue, Sharing/viewing Conferences recorded by student groups. The suggestion by Kelley L. Meeusen was that the teacher publish the recording link for the class, so this may be an option depending on your situation and what other ideas may be posted here.
I ended up just recording the presentation again under the course conference link. Still, it seems to me that you should be able to publish a recorded conference under the group link to the course link. The primary use of the conference function in my experience has been to submit recorded presentations. Why wouldn't canvas allow the group to record presentations, then publish the recording of your choice to the course link for the entire class and professor to view?
Hi Aaron. I am glad that you found a way to get your conference uploaded, and agree with you that it would be nice to have the option of sharing a group recording with the entire class, if desired. You can submit a feature idea for something like this (How do I create a new feature idea? ) but this type of change may be a BigBlueButton and not Canvas function.
While BigBlueButton does record, I believe that it was created to serve more as a videoconferencing tool than software to record presentations which may be why the option doesn't exist now to share a recording outside of a student group. Depending on what the assignment happens to be, you could consider creating a presentation with something like Screencast-O-Matic or a similar screen recording software. On the iPad, I like to use the app Explain Everything to make recordings of my voice and drawings over slides, images, etc. Just something you may want to consider in the future.
