We are creating a direct feed from Banner to Canvas. We are curious how other institutions handle cross listing of classes. Do you use anything beyond the xlist.csv file?
Hi there, Steven.
To get some extra eyes on your question, I'm going to share this with the Canvas Admins group for additional input.
Hello Steven Hill...
I have been reviewing older questions here in the Canvas Community, and I stumbled upon your question. I wanted to check in with you because we have not heard back from you ever since you first posted this question on January 10, 2018. We are also a Banner school (but are in the beginning stages of moving away from that SIS). We also cross-list courses in Canvas, but we do not use the xlist.csv method. For now, it's all manual for us. We don't have that many courses (maybe 20-30 per semester at most?) that are cross-listed, and it's doesn't take us too long to just manually cross-list them in Canvas. Typically, an Administrative Assistance at our Tech College will notify us that one or more courses is stacked/combined in Banner, and then we manually take care of the cross-listing for those courses in Banner. I'm not sure how big your school is, so manual might not be the way to go. Hopefully with our new SIS, we'll be able to automate this more in the coming years.
I'm going to mark your question as "Assumed Answered" because we've not heard back from you and because there hasn't been any new activity in this topic for more than three months. Also, your question seems like it might have a variety of solutions (because you're asking how other schools accomplish this), and so I am going to change the format of your topic from a "Question" (where there is generally one "Correct" answer) to a "Discussion" (where the conversation is more open-ended). I hope that's alright with you.
Looking forward to hearing back from you soon!
Hi, Steven Hill.
We do use the xlist.csv file for cross listing (or "merging" as we call it). How is this not fitting your needs?
I can think of two alternate solutions. As Chris Hofer mentioned, this can be done manually. See How do I cross-list a section in a course as an admin? . Cross listing can also be achieved using the API. See Sections - Canvas LMS REST API Documentation .
